
the breton stripe shirt became an official part of the regulatory uniform for french sailors in 1958. the original iteration of this boatneck top featured 21 stripes, one for each of napoleon’s victories. the name "breton" came from the area of "brittany" in northern france. then seafarers, fishermen, mademoiselle chanel, pablo picasso, and andy warhol picked up the trend. and i finally realize where did my breton stripes obsession come from. it's tadzio from death in venice.
